Acoustic Folk Art 3, Track 7, 03:58
Kansas City

Remember our two bedroom flat
At 41st and Clark
Doing laundry down on 39th street
Sometimes until dark
A booth down at Lucille’s
Where we let the music play
Before she burned
Rode my bike to school
Through the snow and in the rain
You’d drive off to work
And never did complain
Your face on my mind every second
Every hour of every day

Flowers that bloom
In the spring cannot compare
With your eyes sapphire blue
Blessed be the place
Your love found me there
Kansas City led me to you
Kansas City brought me home to you

Moved on out to Raytown
And we were living well
With a washer and a dryer
Barbecue on the grill
Walking ‘round the Ray South track
Baby in a pack
And another who soon
Was on her way
Time and places come and go
Like leaves in the fall
This one truth remains the same
Forever through it all
Your face on my mind every second
Every hour of every day

Flowers that bloom
In the spring cannot compare
With your eyes sapphire blue
Blessed be the place
Your love found me there
Kansas City led me to you
Kansas City brought me home to you

<guitar break>

Flowers that bloom
In the spring cannot compare
With your eyes sapphire blue
Blessed be the place
Your love found me there
Kansas City led me to you
Kansas City brought me home to you
Song Notes

This song is a tribute to the great city where my wife and I met and a reflection of our early years together. When we were first married, we lived on the west side of SouthWest Trafficway, not too far from Westport in Kansas City. We'd go to a restaurant called Lucille's down in Westport and share a milkshake. Lucille's was set up with a 1950's theme and we liked it. Our friends at the time were mostly musicians and Hallmark artists. This was back in the mid '80's. Good years and good memories. The song is country, but begins and ends with a blues riff to honor Kansas City's musical diversity and history. If you make it to Kansas City, please check out the American Jazz Museum and Negro Leagues Baseball Museum, both at 18th and Vine. Very cool.
