Acoustic Folk Art 3, Track 8, 01:42
The Ten Commandments
God gave the Ten Commandments
To the Israelites
So we would know for certain
What is wrong and right
So lend and ear and listen
To what the Bible says
As I/we submit to you
This humble paraphrase
One! You shall have
No other gods before Me
Two! Don’t make an idol
Out of gold or carve it from a tree
Three! Do not misuse the name
Of the Lord your God
Four! Remember the Sabbath day
And keep it holy
Five! Honor your father
And your mother
Six! Do not murder
Your sister or your brother
Seven! Don’t go lovin’
Someone else’s honey
Eight! Do not steal
Someone else’s money
Nine! Do not lie
Or give false testimony
Ten! Do not covet
Your neighbor’s dog
Her bicycle or pony
Now if you will remember
The words here in this song
The Bible says that you’ll live well
And your days will be long
God gave the Ten Commandments
To the Israelites
So we would know for certain
What is wrong and right
So lend and ear and listen
To what the Bible says
As I/we submit to you

Song Notes
This song was written for the kids at our church, but seems to be enjoyed by adults as well. Our church was studying the Ten Commandments at the time (Exodus 20, Deuteronomy 5, The Holy Bible). The goal was to write a song that would be true to the scripture and a song that kids could relate to. And I wanted to write a song that not only would help the kids (and me) learn and remember the Ten Commandments, but also a song that if someone were to ask, "ok, what's the 5th Commandment?", one would be able to think for a second and answer "Honor your father and your mother!" So I added a chant where the kids shout out the number of the commandment - and the kids enjoy that. Long before trekkie was a thing, there was Deuteronomy 5:33. May you live well and may your days be long.
