Acoustic Folk Art 2, Track 11, 05:02
Song Notes
Turtle Dreams is a guitar instrumental in three parts or movements that tells a story through music. The story centers on the fantastic dreams of Sir Roscoe Roundhouse, a tri-modal turtle who swims with a whale, overcomes a squadron of geese in a great battle of the skies and races in the famous fable against an arrogant rabbit.
Turtle Dreams in some ways has been in development for many years. When I started college at Mizzou (University of Missouri – Columbia) in 1980, I met a friend (and eventual brother-in-law) named Mark Freter. We ran together, played Frisbee, talked about school, talked about girls and talked about the creation of the world. But mostly we played guitar. Mark showed me guitar chords and chord progressions that I still use to this day. Many of the chords that are used in the movements of Turtle Dreams came from Mark. I’ve also used chords and chord progressions that Mark showed me in other songs including Persuaded and Milkweed & Helicopters.
Chords are to a guitar player what colors are to an illustrator and chord progressions are like colors that go well together. But, like an illustrator who finds wonderful new colors (maybe a series of dusty blues and grays), you still have to paint the picture. In music, you still have to determine the cadence and series of notes that form the melody or tune. As I played with these chords weaving them together, an instrumental began to form that eventually became Turtle Dreams.
